Description

The iconic 'New Bridge', which is deceptively old, has connected the western side of Île de la Cité to both its banks since 1607. It was opened by French King Henri IV, who rode his white stallion across the bridge. Look out for the 381 mascarons (grotesque figures) that adorn the seven arches on the northern end and five on the southern end. These depict barbers, dentists, pickpockets, loiterers, and other characters. You can view the bridge from the banks of the river or from a boat.
